Swedish Funding Bodies: Avaliable support

Denna information på svenska

Are you interested in applying for project or programme funding from the Wallenberg Foundations? Looking to nominate e.g. young scientists to excellence programmes Pro Futura Scientia, Wallenberg Academy Fellows or the Göran Gustafsson Prize? Perhaps you are keen to invite a distinguished guest researcher to Sweden via e.g. the H.M. Konungens professur i miljövetenskap?

If the answer is “yes”, then you have come to the right place. No need to despair over call passages such as the vice-chancellor must approve the application or the university suggest candidates (or similar phrasing)!

Under the headline Available support – centrally managed applications below, you will find a list of calls that we manage on a yearly basis. Please note that additional non-recurring calls may fall within these criteria: always read a call text carefully to establish whether your application needs central management/to be accompanied by a letter of support. If this is unclear from the call, please get in touch with us!

What we do

The team working with Swedish funding bodies at Research Services provide support to both researchers and different levels of management on applications that require central management. More often than not, this translates to:
1) a prioritisation/nomination of the project/researcher on faculty level, followed by 2) a decision by the university-wide research board and/or the Vice-chancellor for research regarding who will be allowed to apply, and by extension 3) a letter of support/nomination from the Lund University Vice-Chancellor.

(The vast majority of calls from national funders does not fit into this category, meaning that researchers/research groups are themselves responsible for these applications.)

Criteria for central management:

  • The funding body details that the university must have one designated contact person for any form of communication between the university/applicant and the funding body in question.

  • The funding body details that an internal, university-wide prioritisation/nomination of the applicant(s) is carried out.

  • The funding body details that the Vice-chancellor is responsible for nominating applicants.

Management rules

Ahead of most calls that we manage, we distribute to the faculties management rules documents, each stating the prerequisites of the call in question as well as Lund University’s own internal prioritization/nomination process that precedes the funder’s deadline. Management rules for the Wallenberg Foundation calls are also posted on the Staff Pages.

Normally, the management rules are distributed 3-6 months before the funder deadline, depending on how much preparatory work the internal prioritization/nomination process require.

Prioritization by the university-wide Research Board

For calls considered of particularly high strategic importance, a working group meeting with representatives from the university-wide Research Board (link to the Staff pages) forms part of the Lund University internal process. This group make recommendations to the Vice-chancellor for research and the rest of the Board on which projects/research leaders will be prioritized/nominated from Lund University to submit an application to the funder in question.

For calls where there is a need for a cross-faculty agreement on which researchers to prioritize or nominate, the final decision is made either by the full university-wide Research Board, or by the Vice-chancellor for research.

The type of support we provide researchers varies between calls – from in-depth application (strategy/budget) framing to solely administrative service.
